| Book Club for Teens: The Midwife's Apprentice | The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman. Come join us for our first ever book club for Teens. We will be reading Karen Cushman's The Midwife's Apprentice, a book that takes place in medieval England. The protagonist is Alyce, who rises from the dung heap (literally) of homelessness and namelessness to find a station in life -- apprentice to the crotchety Snaggletoothed midwife Jane Sharp. On Alyce's first solo outing as a midwife, she fails to deliver. Instead of facing her ignorance, Alyce chooses to run from failure -- never a good choice. Though the book is fiction, it is filled with historical accuracy, savvy dialog, fast-paced action, and plucky, original characters that older readers will eagerly devour. (Ages 12 and older) Available for about $6.00 from any bookstore. |

| Needle Felting | The class is a needle felting class. Participants must be at least 11 years old or parents must contact instructor privately. This class is completely FUN! Use color, wool, your imagination and one special tool to make a magical critter (or two). This class takes an ancient art and uses a modern tool to accomplish it. This is a dry felting technique that uses a tremendously fun product, fairly quickly. A brief history of felting will be addressed and special emphasis will be put upon our time period of study. Parents are advised… Students might prick themselves on the finger with the needles. (But there are no magic spells to make them fall asleep) Adults are welcome. |
